My Design Ethos

My Design ethos – Hedgelands is where I live but it is also a state of mind. My artistic endeavours over the last 10 years have drawn on the place – its natural surroundings, the wildlife and particularly flowers and plants have all either been the subject of my art or have inspired it.

I design around materials. One bead or a fitting can spark off a design. I love to try new techniques or combine different techniques in unexpected ways. I like beads or cabachons that have 'hidden depths' in their colours and patterns. I like to discover something new each time I look at a piece. I express these desires in my jewellery in different ways.

Whenever possible, I use lampwork beads handmade by glass artists in this country and further afield. I also use semi-precious stones, precious metals like silver or gold-fill and any other materials that will deliver the look I'm after.

I don't have a room full of any one design so you are seeing the item that is for sale. I can replicate some designs, but other are complete one-offs and unique. I

How I got into Jewellery Design

Well, what's to tell? I've come to jewellery through Stained Glass. This seems to be a common occurrence for Glass artists. One minute you are happily making leaded glass panels and the next you are pondering a pile of lovely glass beads wondering how to put them together whilst preventing the cats (see Socks below) from playing with them. I (see below) live in mid Devon on a smallholding with a couple of cats and a fella (below again).
